Steam Photographic Workshops from Classic Traction:
What are Photographic Workshops?:
Classic Traction is pleased to be able to offer a selection of photographic courses based on preserved steam railways and the scenic main and branch lines of Devon and Cornwall. Consisting of photographing trains in the landscape, these courses are ideal for photographers of all levels, from the accomplished photographer to the complete novice, who wish to expand their knowledge and experience of steam railways in the South West.
All of the photographic courses are led by Steve Andrews, and the courses are available either as one-to-one tuition (ie instructor & pupil) or as group sessions (consisting of up to a maximum of three pupils). The courses are offered as full day courses, but we also offer an evening taster course as well (in the summer months only). Courses can also be booked as multi-day courses, so for example, if you are holidaying in the South West, and want an experienced and professional perspective on your railway photography, or just a professional guide during your time in the West Country, this could be the ideal course for you!
All of the prices include transport to / from the designated pick up, with prices starting from £75 for an evening taster course (6pm - 9pm, Summer only), to £125 for a full day course (one-to-one) or £100 for a group booking.
We also offer further discounts for a 3 day course for £350 or £500 for a 5 day course.

The photographic courses available:
Course No. 1: The South Devon Railway
COURSE No. 1: THE SOUTH DEVON RAILWAY
In this first course, we photograph and lineside the former Great Western branch from Totnes to Ashburton. Today, the line runs for 7 miles from Totnes to Buckfastleigh, and in this course we aim to photograph some of the most famous locations along this quintessential GWR branch. This full day course starts at Buckfastleigh at 9.30am, and (depending on the timetable and workings for the day) we will photograph at Buckfastleigh Station, Caddaford curve, Hood Bridge and Staverton in the morning, having an hour break for lunch at Buckfastleigh. After lunch we will photograph Hood Bridge, by the River Dart, Riverford curve and finish our photographic session at Dartington for the final departure from Totnes. We then return to Buckfastleigh for a de-brief and
conclusion on the day's course. Expected finishing time: 17.00 - 17.30. Pick up / finishing point for this course is Buckfastleigh (SDR) Station. PRICE: £125 per person (one-to-one) or £100 (Group - 2 or more).

Course No. 2: Down the line to Kingswear
COURSE No. 2: DOWN THE LINE TO KINGSWEAR
Classic Traction's second photographic course is a full day course photographing the Paignton & Dartmouth line to Kingswear. We meet at Paignton (BR) Station at 09.30 or Churston (PDSR) Station at 09.45 and after a brief introduction to the day's aims and objections, we will spend the morning photographing trains climbing the 1 in 60 gradient of Goodrington bank at Goodrington Sands, Oyster Curve, Waterside and Waterside curve. After a brief lunch, our afternoon session begins with Hook Hills Viaduct before completing our day photographing trains arriving and departing from Kingswear. After a debrief and conclusion of the day's course, we aim to conclude between 17.30 and 18.00 depending on the timetable of the day. We conclude the day back at Paignton (BR) Station, which is also adjacent to Paignton's bus station. If a Sunday is chosen, there will be the added bonus of photographing the 'Torbay Express' with either GWR 60xx 'King' 6024 King Edward I, LNER A1 Peppercorn Pacific 60163 Tornado or BR Standard 8P 4-6-2 71000 Duke of Gloucester. This course is of particular interest as later this year Paignton & Dartmouth 'flagship' 7827 Lydham Manor is to be repainted into BR black.
